Hamilton Drive Action Group
We call on the City of York to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists on Hamilton Dr.
Background
Hamilton Drive is a popular route for many groups of people:
- for families with children traveling to and from Hob Moor Community Primary School, Acomb Primary School, Our Lady Queen of Martyr’s RC Primary School, or St Paul’s CE Primary School;
- for young adults traveling to and from York High School, All Saints RC School, the Mount School, or the Millthorpe School;
- for residents accessing West Bank Park, York RI Sports Club, New Lane Allotments, shops along Hamilton Dr, quiet routes to Hob Moor Nature Preserve, and the Barbara Grove / Love Ln footbridge.
Unfortunately, it is also a popular route for motorised through-traffic seeking to avoid the traffic signals on Acomb Rd and Tadcaster Rd. This extra traffic has created unsafe and congested conditions that pose a threat to local residents. Dozens of pedestrian and cyclist casualties have been reported in the last 25 years.
It is only a matter of time until a child is injured. We need to act now to make the road safe.
Our Proposal
The City should reserve Hamilton Dr for local trips, emergency services, and buses through the use of traffic filters, one-way streets, and traffic calming measures.
The City should build an active travel path with physical barriers to stop motorists that depart their travel lane. The path should connect to the new, multi-million pound accessible footbridge at Wilton Rise to provide a safe path to the city centre.
Extras
Hamilton Dr is an important route for eight local schools. See below for the school catchments that induce journeys along Hamilton Dr.
