City Centre Cycle Access
We call on the City of York to develop a cycle route through the city centre to restore access for Blue Badge cyclists.
The City should implement the recommendations of the 2021 York City Centre Active Travel Access Study (pdf link). The report observes:
The lack of a north-south cycling route through the footstreets significantly impedes cycling connectivity for journeys into or through the centre of York. This presents a major obstacle for many potential cyclists, such as those using cycles as a mobility aid, cycle couriers, people carrying small children or shopping on their bikes, and some women who feel safer on their bike (rather than walking or catching public transport).
It continues:
We therefore recommend that a north-south two-way cycle route through the city centre should be provided, using the Blake St – Davygate – Parliament St alignment. This should be accessible to all at all times of day and should not require any form of licence or permission.
